You might be dreading it, or you might actually enjoy it. Either way, it’s time to throw on some of your favourite music and tidy up the house with a little spring cleaning!
If you fall into that first group, don’t worry, we’ve got some tips to make things a bit easier. Things to do first, oft-forgotten spots, and even some pointers for the trickiest places to clean.
Declutter
Clutter can make you feel more stressed and anxious, so the first thing we like to do is put everything where it should be! Our brains like order, and studies show that a disorganized home can make you feel less focused.
Before you get into the nitty gritty, go room by room and declutter! Not only will it make things easier when you really start cleaning, but it will also give you an instant feeling of gratification.
Everything AND The Kitchen Sink
If you’ve got a bit of a smell coming from the sink, there are more than a few ways to clear out that stubborn odour.
If you’ve got a garbage disposal, drop a few lemon rinds in and turn it on for about 20 seconds and then flush it away with some water. For those without a disposal, combining hot water with baking soda, lemon juice, or dish soap, is often enough to get rid of the smell.
A word of caution: while it’s usually safe to pour boiling water down the drain, never do it as a remedy for a clogged drain! The water can get stuck too and warp the pipes!
The Microwave
Unless you’re a 3-star Michelin restaurant, your microwave probably gets a fair amount of use! We know ours does.
For better cleaning, just put a cup of water, a few slices of lemon, and some vinegar into it and turn it on high for a few minutes. You should see the windows start to steam up, and then you can simply remove them to make wiping things down a whole lot easier.
Steam Clean
If you want to keep things more natural and avoid some chemicals found in cleaning agents, a steam cleaner will be your best friend!
From the couch to the curtains, a steam cleaner will help lift stubborn dirt and give things a fresh, clean smell!
Top To Bottom
Another fantastic tip that applies to every room in the house is to work from the ceiling down.
Dusting or cleaning up high can often dislodge dirt, making it fall to the floor. So, why vacuum the floor, clean that shelf, then have to vacuum all over again? Just work top to bottom!
Clean What You Can’t See
See some dirt on the counter? Wash it off! Some dust on the TV? Grab the duster! Spotting places that need cleaning is one thing, but never forget about the air you’re breathing!
Checking your furnace and HVAC filters should be a standard practice in your spring cleaning regiment. If you struggle with a stuffy nose or allergies, an extra air filter in the bedroom can also work wonders!
